Why do people prefer Online Therapy?

There is no need for travel, which means less time away from work and more flexible logistics for transportation or childcare. You can also schedule appointments with less anticipation and more flexibility.

The technology is now available to people who previously did not have access to mental health services, such as those living in remote areas or in emergency situations.

For those who have previously been hesitant to seek mental health care, online health services can be a more convenient first step than traditional mental health services.

As the popularity of online health services grew, providers became more acquainted with the evolution of video conferencing, and some transitioned to entirely virtual practices.

What Is Online Therapy?

  • Currently, there are numerous terms for describing Internet-based interventions aimed at physical or psychological health. E-therapy, cybertherapy, ehealthcare, online therapy, telehealth, telepsychology, and online psychological interventions are all terms that are commonly used.
  • Despite the mentioned terminological heterogeneity, it is worth noting the definition proposed by the American Psychological Association (APA), which defines Telepsychological interventions as the provision of psychological services via non-presencial communication technologies such as telephone, email, text, videoconference, mobile applications, and web-based programs.
  • Together, it shapes a new way of understanding communication between users and health professionals, implying not only technological advancement but also a new way of working based on a positive attitude toward technology and a commitment to improving health from a global and connected perspective.

Effectiveness

Is Online Therapy good for you?

And research to date shows mental health care delivered remotely—also known as telepsychology or teletherapy—is effective. Psychologists—along with psychiatrists, social workers and others—have built a substantial literature base on telehealth interventions that work for a variety of problems and populations.

“What we’ve seen is that telehealth is essentially just as effective as face-to-face psychotherapy—and retention rates are higher“.

In general, studies show teletherapy works. A study that reviewed 755 journal articles  found video conferencing to be just as effective as in-person care in most cases.

Confidentiality

How confidential is online therapy?

Respect for your privacy is extremely important to psychologists. It is part of his professional ethics code. But, more importantly, this is a requirement for maintaining your professional license. Psychologists who violate patient confidentiality risk losing their license to practice in the future.

To receive the most benefit from psychotherapy, you must be open and honest about your most private thoughts and behaviors. Although this can be upsetting, you should not be concerned that the psychologist will reveal your secrets to others, except in the most extreme cases, such as:

  • If you admit to the psychologist that you intend to harm yourself or others, the psychologist is required to notify the authorities in order to protect the patient and the safety of third parties.
  • Psychologists should also report any cases of child, elderly, or disabled abuse, exploitation, or abandonment.
  • Furthermore, the psychologist may be required to provide certain information to the court during legal proceedings.

I often prefer them, in several ways, over standard sessions, and I can see this being part of my ongoing practice even after resuming in-person CBT”.

Percent of Online Therapy

What percent of people use online therapy?

A new national public opinion poll of U.S. adults by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), finds that expansion of telehealth is welcomed by most Americans. A large portion of the population have used telehealth services; more than half say they would use telehealth for mental health services; and more than one in three say they prefer telehealth.

Nearly four in ten Americans (38%) have used telehealth services to meet with a medical or mental health professional, up from 31% in the fall of 2020. Among those using telehealth services, the vast majority have used the services since the start of the pandemic (82%). Most survey respondents are using telehealth through a video format (69%), while 38% have used phone calls only.

How do I tell if I need Therapy?

It is not always easy to determine whether we require psychological assistance. When deciding whether or not to conduct a consultation, consider the following indicators:

Sleep

Thoughts

Emotions

Body

Problems

Losts/Solitude

The majority of these symptoms indicate the presence of psychological issues that must be addressed with the assistance of a therapist.

How often should you see a Therapist?

The number and frequency of psychotherapy sessions required will be determined by some of the following factors:

It is time-limited; typically, the treatment lasts 14 to 16 one-hour sessions.

The severity of them and the length of time you had to suffer or live with them.

The rate at which you evolve, as well as your ability to adapt and learn in different situations.

The amount and quality of help received from relatives and close friends
